Not that there’s ever a dull day at Bucknell in general, but with Outdoor Education and Leadership, things get even more spicy. This past weekend, OEL had four major events happening over just three days- it was a weekend jam-packed with fun and friends!
The weekend kick-started on Friday night with the annual OEL talent show. A great showcase of the many talents we have in OEL; there was juggling, singing, paddling lessons, hula-hooping, jump roping, power posing, and even Rigel-versing (a talent much like chair-versing, but around our beloved Rigel instead of a chair, so clearly much more exciting). We all shared snacks and laughs while cheering on our very own as they showed what they were made of. At the end of the night, we left full of love for the OEL fam, and newfound appreciation for their many talents.
Saturday was a great day out at Cowan Retreat Center, home of the Challenge Course. CLIMBucknell and Alpha Phi Omega co-sponsored an “Adventure Day” to benefit the local YMCA in Milton. Challenge Course manager Elaney Marcotte was very pleased with the outcome of the event.
“Even though the weather was a little cold and cloudy, we still had a good number of students and staff members come to the event. The participants were able to go on the low ropes, high ropes, and climbing tower. Many participants even were able to zipline. There was a lot of fun had,” she comments.
Although I personally wasn’t able to be there, I heard it was a great time, and I’m already booking my calendar for next year’s event!
Sunday brought two more OEL events, those being an Outing Club trip (led in part by yours truly!) to the Black Forest Trail and a bouldering competition at the climbing wall. Although turnout for the OC trip was small, we piled into the car and headed to the trail head. While we were hiking, we had some great conversations, saw some amazing views, got a great workout in, and even stumped each other with a few riddles on the way back out. (Okay, so only I was stumped by the riddles, but it was still a great time!!)
Back on campus, the bouldering competition at the climbing wall provided a day full of climbing and smiles. The best part about this event? It brought collegiate climbers from all over the area together!
Rachel Johnson, manager of the climbing wall on campus, mentioned how positive the experience was; “Everyone seemed to have a great time and it was great to see the communities from Bucknell climbers and other schools come together.”
After climbing some sick routes, climbers relaxed and enjoyed pizza while times were compared and prizes were awarded. Overall, a great way to wrap up the weekend.
Inspired by all this talk of friends and fun? Want to get in on the good times! Then look no further, dear reader! Up next for OEL, Outing Club is bringing the one and only Clyde Peeling from Reptile Land to campus this Thursday night! Check the Bucknell OEL Facebook page for updates, and don’t forget to stop by the Rental Center in Tustin to check out some gear to enjoy this week’s warm weather! Until next week, y’all!
